What is the Special Pay for Medical Officers - Variable Special Pay (VSP) and who is eligible to receive it?

Answer

Special pays for medical officers include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Variable Special Pay (VSP)
  • Board Certified Pay (BCP)*
  • Additional Special Pay (ASP)*
  • Incentive Special Pay (ISP)*
  • Special Pay For Active Duty of Reserve Medical Officers*
  • Multiyear Special Pay (MSP)*
  • *Each of these special pays are outlined in separate FAQs.

    Variable Special Pay (VSP)
    The following individuals may be entitled to VSP:

  • Officers of the Medical Corps of the Army or Navy or officers of the Air Force designated as medical officers who are on active duty for a period of at least one year.
  • Medical Corps officers in the Army or Navy or officers of the Air Force designated as medical officers who were on active duty less than one year as medical officers in support of the Persian Gulf Conflict.
  • Medical officers who are on active duty for less than one year for other than active duty for training may be eligible for VSP. Examples include (1) Reserve Medical Officers called to active duty for more than 30 days but less than 1 year; (2) active duty medical officers involuntarily retained under 10 U.S.C. 12305; (3) active duty medical officers who voluntarily agree to remain on active duty when officers are involuntarily retained on active duty under 10 U.S.C. 12305; (4) and retired medical officers recalled to active duty for more than 30 days.
