Eligibillity: Incapacitated Child - Cancer Diagnosis

Question

My incapacitated child has been diagnosed with cancer. Can I still claim the child as a dependent?

Answer

If the child meets the qualification as an incapacitated dependent over the age of 21, the child will remain your dependent.

A completed DD Form 137-5 (DD Form 137-5 Dependency Statement -- Incapacitated Child over Age 21) and supporting documentation are required to make any determination or redetermination.

Submit your claim via AskDFAS; an examiner will review the application and notify you when a determination has been made. Please allow 30-45 days for review and processing.
