Annuitant coverage if former spouse remarries before age 55

Question

What happens to my former spouse's Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) coverage if my former spouse remarries before age 55?

Answer

Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) coverage is suspended and premium deductions from your retired pay are stopped if your former spouse becomes ineligible due to remarriage before age 55 and DFAS is notified. The former spouse's SBP coverage is considered suspended for as long as your former spouse's subsequent marriage remains in effect. If the subsequent marriage is terminated by death, annulment, or divorce, your former spouse's eligibility is reinstated and SBP cost deductions resume. It is vital that you and covered beneficiaries notify DFAS of all major life events with supporting documentation so that SBP premiums and SBP annuity payments remain accurate.
