May courses other than accounting and business law courses be creditable toward the 24 semester hour

Question

May courses other than accounting and business law courses be creditable toward the 24 semester hour requirement?

Answer

Yes. Up to 6 semester hours of appropriate non-accounting courses may be creditable. This includes finance courses which are primarily concerned with the development, analysis, and presentation of financial data. However, the courses must have as a prerequisite one or more clearly identifiable accounting courses which the employee has completed. There are some courses which are not creditable even though they have an accounting prerequisite. These include bookkeeping-type courses which are never creditable toward the 24 semester hours. Employees should seek guidance by accessing opm.gov and checking the guidelines on this policy.
