What is COLA?
Question
What is COLA?
Answer
Cost of Living Allowance, or COLA is a cash allowance intended to enable an equitable standard of living in areas where cost of living is unusually high. There are two types of COLA payable to active duty military members depending on where they are stationed (overseas or INCONUS). Regulations governing both entitlements are contained in the Joint Federal Travel Regulations, maintained by the Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO). You can find information on Overseas COLA on the DTMO website at www.defensetravel.dod.mil/site/cola.cfm and CONUS COLA for members stationed in the contiguous United States at www.defensetravel.dod.mil/site/conus.cfm
